Regretably, Halloween doesn't fall on a weekend this year, so the time honoured tradition of rock 'n roll, dress up Halloween parties with real BITE is not being very well honoured. However, settling for being a bit early, a few bands have strung together some nice line-ups and parties, so hell, have a jorl on the weekend AND in the mid-week as well!

Something weird and wonderful is happening out there in the world of live music and indeed of recorded music. A quantum shift is occouring and critical mass seems to have ben achieved.

Nearly every weekend, there are killer live shows to get to right here in SA... nearly every week I hear of yet another indie/alternative band that is suddenly coming to SA... and its being organised by the bands and the fans, not the big companies. Its happening, we are gradually unshackling ourselves from our sheep herd training and reaching out for what is really enjoyable to us, to forming gradually our own sense of identity... I love it!

Congratulations to The Parlotones on their deal with Universal records, I hope with all I am worth that it turns out good, and doesn't fizzle out as so many of these kinds of things have in the past. The guys have the talent and the perseverance and my hopes and dreams go with them, as do many of the peeps that (I think) read this blog!)

OK, onto the weekends entertainment! Friday night... you gotta be at Loaded! Sorry everyone else, but the new Lark album launch is the must get to for this Friday in JHB! Saturday night is Cellar door, so once again, Newtown is the happening part of JHB! PTA fans should def try and catch Slashdogs on Friday and Hellphones on Saturday! Go out and conquer!

Holy Crap! It's Monday Again!

It’s been a while since I wrote anything really personal on my blog, so I thought today might be a good day to do that again! (although of course, there is a hidden agenda here somewhere!)

About 8 years ago, electronic music finally broke through the forward perimeters of my musical tastes in the form of the soundtrack of the movie Hackers (of all things!). Unlike a lot of alternative kids in the early nineties, I had not been swept along by the tide when Raving hit the SA underground scene. Music with next to no lyrical content, so much in the way of repetition and imbued with such a hectic drug culture just didn’t interest me back then. I’m still not interested in the drug culture, but my interest in electronica has been growing steadily.

The emergence of the down-tempo, chill-out sub-genre has been of particular interest to me though. It seems that these guys are more interested in the kind of constructions that I am interested in, play more with lyrical content and are also more inclined to trawl the archive of recent musical history for inspiration.

Felix: buy this man's Music!

Take Felix Laband for example, his stuff is so riddled with early 80’s electron references that if you are younger than 30, you might think he was inventing the stuff! But what he is doing is seamlessly referring back to a period of music while moving forward in style. Impressive and inspiring. Since Thin Shoes in June first came out, I have been a devoted fan.

Then along came The Ministry of Sound Chill out albums, and whole bunch of others. Hmm, nice on the whole. A mate of mine the UK, has started his own label, Black Mango records, and issues South African style chill out albums called the Breathe Sunshine series. Very nice and laid back stuff.

And now finally, a night spot has decided to take on the genre. The Fuel Café in Newtown has started the Soul Food Sessions. These take place every Thursday night at the Fuel Café in Newtown and feature some interesting mixtures of music. The owner Paul is not limiting himself to only down-tempo electro, but is certainly not going mad with really hectic house or rock. But he is featuring stuff like funk, jazz, electro and some lighter rock oriented stuff. He is ALSO featuring a half price cocktail TWO hours from 8pm-10pm… now if that isn’t a good way to unwind , I don’t know what is! Of course Fuel Café is also in the middle of all those security cameras etc and has loads of parking, so it’s easy and safe to find.

There a cool party there this Thursday featuring Short and Root (doing their down tempo electro thing, but this week with a full bands) as well as Australian visitors, Veeva Feeva. Come along and check out something different why don’t you?
