The beautifully canorous LARK has always been one of the freshest SA acts ever.

Sadly, the band has decided to call it a day.

This is a poignant parting indeed, and certainly a huge loss to the boundary bashing band genus.

No doubt the superb individual talents in this outfit will move on to greater things.

Come and show your appreciation tonight, Friday 22^nd, as LARK performs for the last time at The Crazy 88 in Norwood.

On the decks for the night will be The Smiling Lion, Ricky H and the Milk Bar Kid.

Something weird and wonderful is happening out there in the world of live music and indeed of recorded music. A quantum shift is occouring and critical mass seems to have ben achieved.

Nearly every weekend, there are killer live shows to get to right here in SA... nearly every week I hear of yet another indie/alternative band that is suddenly coming to SA... and its being organised by the bands and the fans, not the big companies. Its happening, we are gradually unshackling ourselves from our sheep herd training and reaching out for what is really enjoyable to us, to forming gradually our own sense of identity... I love it!

Congratulations to The Parlotones on their deal with Universal records, I hope with all I am worth that it turns out good, and doesn't fizzle out as so many of these kinds of things have in the past. The guys have the talent and the perseverance and my hopes and dreams go with them, as do many of the peeps that (I think) read this blog!)

OK, onto the weekends entertainment! Friday night... you gotta be at Loaded! Sorry everyone else, but the new Lark album launch is the must get to for this Friday in JHB! Saturday night is Cellar door, so once again, Newtown is the happening part of JHB! PTA fans should def try and catch Slashdogs on Friday and Hellphones on Saturday! Go out and conquer!

Hey hey hey, its um, Thursday! So, what a weird week, with that holiday in the middle.. Some nice gigs in and around JHB in the next few days, but I got no news from KZN and have one show worth seeing in CT… hmm, me thinks I must be missing something… surely the mother city aint so dead! Anyhoo, moving swiftly on… I won’t be here the weeknd, but I can reccommend the Lark gig at 88 on Friday and both the shows on Saturday in JHB are great… Diesel Whores AND The Cellar Door party! One for the live electro freaks, one for the bad ass psychobilly guitar freaks! LOL!

Sing like a Lark, Sting like an inge

Media darlings and dark electronic Cape Tonians Lark have been generating a lot of interest lately, so I thought I’d ask them a couple of questions. As you will see, my timing was obviously not good! BUT an interesting read none the less. Watch me trip myself up with my assumptions and spare me the bruises to my ego!

When your EP was first released, you received some quite bad responses (I am thinking of that FHM review) Yet now you seem to be media darlings. How has that change taken place?

Inge: Media darlings? Fresh meat you mean.

Oh man did FHM hate this recording, calling it a bunch of nuts and bolts in a washing machine…

Your sound is based around beats and rhythms and Inge’s voice. What brought you to this space as a band as opposed to any other genre?

Inge: We work with what we have. Turns out it is enough.

The bands stance is one of edgy cool. Do you guys actually think you’re cool, or was it a kind of osmosis from the music you play?

Inge: Ag whatever man.

This girl is NOT a babe, OK?

So, Inge’s a babe, Paul’s the dark mysterious one, and Fuzi’s the Fuzzy one. How do you guys relate to the pigeon-holing you might be exposed to as individuals? Is there a fear that Inge might come to overshadow the band due to her visual appeal?

Inge: I have been accused, by some capetonian village people, of selling out because I appeared on the cover of SL. Funny how everyone supports your craft when you are waitressing and struggling to keep it going but as soon as your music video gets played on tv and you say...do a cover for SL then you get accused of not keeping it real anymore. For those out there (cause the band ain't worrying about it) concerned that I might come to overshadow the band, due to my visual appeal, I suppose I could wear a bag over my head and chop my legs off... but at the end of the day... we all know that's not why you hate me.

Despite the sudden glut of attention Lark is receiving, no-one would ever mistake your sound for mainstream. But what of your lyrical content and your intentions? What are you about as a band from a content point of view?

Inge: I write auto. Like the chick from Stigmata with the one weird eye scribbling down things on the board, I just let things flow out of me.

Lark stand out as pretty unique on the musical landscape right now. Did you intend to position yourselves like this or were you just following the muse?

Inge: All three of us are unique therefor it reflects in our music. The only intention we had was to never make music for anybody but ourselves.

How do you go about choosing acts to play with at your gigs? What is high on your list of criteria?

Inge: Sometimes we don't get what we want or hope for but generally we like to play with familiar spirits meaning acts with similar or complimentary influences and or foundations.

There is a full length album on the way. What can we expect? Variations on what has gone before or new directions entirely?

Inge: It's different but you can still chew the common thread which is the organic and digital marriage contrasted by some dark and operatic vocal infidelities.

Are there any radio stations in South Africa that are playing your music on a regular basis?

Inge: 5fm, mfm, tuksfm, east coast...

How do you find your music is reaching fans in South Africa? Word of mouth, gigs, press? I am assuming NOT radio here!

Inge: A little bit of everything. Playing big festivals always help. Splashy Fen was awesome! Radio has been kind to us. We are even being played on underground german radio stations.

Many local bands who play a niche sound to a small niche market have dreams of heading off overseas to attack a market that has larger numbers interested in their niche. Does Lark harbour the same dark ambitions?

Inge: Yes.

Finally, can you give me a one paragraph summary of the band: Assume aliens have given you this one and only opportunity to immortalise yourselves for ever, what do you have to say for yourselves?
