In 2006, a new phenomenon appeared on the live circuit in Jozi city. Known as Jim Neversink, it was a country band that looked and sounded like an indie band, well, not quite. And that was the start.

Since they released the debut album and got gigging, this band has clearly intrigued everyone around them and gradually built a very solid reputation and a loyal fan base.

In an effort to find out why and how, I got hold of their lead singer and song writer, Michael Whitehead.

1) Country influenced rock and roll hardly seems like a recipe for success in the SA market. Why on earth did you do it?

Just because it was there…country is a very pliable medium. It’s the one colour that works well with other genres, and when it is combined with other styles it almost becomes a spacer, a coffee break in an otherwise long story.

2) If there in one thing about Jim Neversink the band that seems to consistently take people by surprise, it’s your live show. How much thought and/or effort do you guys put into this?

Not very much at all. Actually, there is no script. Audience and adrenaline play a big part. As a kid I suffered serious panic attacks just sitting in school assembly and later I used to freak out on parade grounds in the navy, so it is a most unusual career for me to have chosen. Mostly I’m very clumsy on stage. I have been told that it is part of my appeal…I knock things over and forget where I am.

Sometimes this all looks rehearsed, especially when the band mirrors my awkwardness. Matthew starts smashing his accordion while Katherine and Warrick laugh uproariously at their own private joke. The Neversinks’ live act has a very quirky appeal.

3) OK, the name: now a lot of people I guess think you are Jim Neversink, but your not, you’re Michael Whitehead.

Why the name? Well, it’s simple really…(he says obtusely) my family name is Whitehead and my mom liked the Mary Poppins story, so she called me Michael and called my sister Jane….

I really am Jim Neversink. I only feel like Michael Whitehead when I do menial crap to support my career as a musician. As soon as I talk about or play music then I am Jim Neversink. I am Jim.

As an adopted child, I have always liked the idea of creating my own identity from scratch. I chose the name Jim Neversink for myself in 2003. Jim from James (which is my middle name) and Neversink named after a river in the ‘States; too shallow for children to drown in. Because I have had a couple of nasty experiences in my life, I liked the positive affirmation. Stay afloat, never sink, keep going.

And this is the happy face.....

4) Seems that you are pretty Elvis obsessed… what is the story behind this?

I dunno! You should ask the 200 million other people around the world who are also “Elvis-obsessed”…I’ve always loved his passion for music. When I was a kid he just took me miles and miles away from our lounge. The interesting thing is that I think my love for Elvis is genetic. About seven years ago I made contact with my birth father’s family. I was told that my biological father started the first Elvis fan club in Ireland way back before I was born. That just floored me and brought goose flesh.

5) Your album has consistently been rated as one of the best SA releases of 2006, and yet it came out of nowhere! What are your plans for a new album? More work?

It must seem like it came out of nowhere, because it is just so difficult to get gigs and to get a push from radio because I don’t sound like a moron or a generic over-compressed airhead. I am pleased that someone somewhere out there has been listening!

Actually, we have all put in a tremendous amount of effort to “come out of nowhere”…It’s time for people to make the effort in turn; to give up their comfort zones for a night or two, and come to the dives where we play. That is, if they want to hear something other than “ Yo,Yo, I’m a Ho-Ho” music.

I’ve written another 30 songs since my debut album and I’ve demo-ed several for pre- production purposes. Matthew Fink will be at the helm again to ensure that he gets the very worst out of me. This is his speciality which ensures that he is the top music producer in this country.

For this album, there will be less programming as Katherine Hunt and Warrick Poultney are now full time Neversinkers and are close at hand to lay their mania down on hard-drive.

6) A lot of the songs on the album are quite dark, and yet the overall tone comes out as defiant, perhaps even “Fuck You”. What is your emotional source for these lyrics?

I’m a storyteller. To be a storyteller, you have to be a very keen observer. Your observations can’t be too vicarious, but should rather be stuck right into the meat of things. I need to be in a rickety shark cage while someone on the outside is being attacked, so to speak. It may not be me, but I get close enough (and I am qualified enough!) to write a detailed account of the horror…ah, the horror.

7) You’ve personally been around the block a few times in a musical sense, and played in successful SA bands before. What is different for you this time around? What did you learn the first time that you have changed?

Yip, I started Famous Curtain Trick in the early Nineties and I also played bass for a great band called Lilo. I’ve discovered that generally people in this country don’t have a natural leaning towards good music. In defiance, like Three Bored White Guys, Lilo, Diesel Whores, Riku Lätti and a handful of others I continue to throw my pearls before swine.

I know that might seem conceited but it is just the truth of how mainstream music lulls critical music appraisal. People are too scared to think for themselves and to like something different. I’ve changed nothing. I just keep playing what I believe in.

8) Bands like the Diesel Whores and others have certainly picked up on you and love playing with you guys… do you think there actually might be some kind of alt country scene brewing? If so, what do you make of that?

Aaah, isn’t it interesting that I just mentioned the Whores? I like to think there’s some kind of groundswell going on, but the bands we have been speaking about, have always been here. Media interest and critical acclaim has certainly indicated that the interest is growing. I think it would be very refreshing to have a “scene” brewing, even if it only means that bigger audiences and more media people pull in for a beer!

9) The band has definitely conquered JHB, playing to an eclectic bunch of music lovers. What are the plans for the rest of the country?

We’ve played Cape Town and we were well received. We certainly need sponsorship to take this to a new level so that we can share our music with other cities If we just had about 10 % of the support that our pampered sportsmen enjoy, world domination would no longer just be a dream.

10) I think the biggest question in the mind of anyone who has heard the first album is, when is the next one?!?!?!?

This year. We’re in no hurry. We just want it to be right. It should come in by April/May.

11) With Jim Neversink, have you seen or felt anything new that makes being a live musician rewarding? Any key moments?

The feedback I’ve been getting from both loyalists and fuck-you-ists is fun!

12) It’s a total adolescent dream to be playing rock and roll (of whatever genre *grin*). In your view, how does the reality square up?

Because of the panic attacks, I’ve never really wanted to be in the public eye. But because I am also a writer, I find that I interpret my own songs best and I am therefore compelled to get on a stage and perform. Actually, I’ve come to love the rock and roll experience. What a rush! I get depressed when I don’t have gigs.

13) It’s January of a brand new year. Please give us a run down of how Jim Neversink plans to fill that up!

The Neversinks and I actually have big plans for this year. Apart from recording the album, we have gigs, festivals and national tours lined up as well. There has been such amazing publicity and public acclaim recently; that we want to strike while the iron is hot. We want to get out there and play!Dates we have lined for the next few weeks are: Steak And Ale in Pretoria on 2nd Feb, Back2Basix on 9th February.

As for the rest of the year, I will continue writing songs. It is what I do best and what I love doing most.

December is upon us - have mercy

Friday is the 1st of December, the 1st day of the last month of the year. For me, 2006 has been an epic year of mind-numbing proportions. I have learned more about business, my self and people in this year than I think I have learned in the three before that.

It has been a tough year, with some hard lessons. I believe I possibly wasn't listening in the past, so the hammer came out this year. That said, it has also been a magnificent year and I feel priveliged to be here, doing what I do.

Some of what has happened has been unneccesary in a way, some people just really didn't listen, and others were just bad choices. I made some big mistakes and also took some delightful wrong turns. But over all, I can honestly say that it has been a good year in its sum total.

So, to celebrate the bounty of another year alive and breathing, here is a selection of live music for you all to enjoy... this week even covering the Eastern Cape!

This is becoming my traditional exhortation, but let not repetition dull the edge of it in your brains:

Go out and see live music. This is your culture, embrace it, live it, make a difference in your world. Don't let the radio or TV or media rule your mind, find your own truth, be your own person!

Yes indeed, Sunday is Guy Fawkes night... its funny how so many bands remembered the osbcure Euro centric event of Halloween (or is it becasue it has become such a toy of that cultural imperialist nation, the USA)

And yet, no-one really seems to have rememberd the date that the celebrated Anarchist Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the British Houses of parliament. In terms of the social revolution and the so-called punk ethic of so many of these bands.. I DO find that a tad surprising...
