Uptown downtown, tunes are thumping!

My weekend past was a study in contrasts, united only by top quality live South African music. And this above all else, is what thrills me and enchants me about where we are in our corner of the global music biz.

Regretably, she wasn't wearing this outfit on Friday night...

Friday night I hauled ass out to Pretoria South, aka Bryanston, and the Tanz Café, to watch Louise Carver play live. Now you may be wondering what a 6 foot tattooed lunk is doing going to watch girly pop in Bruyanston. Well, for a start, ther is way more to Louise than girly pop – she is an impressive song-writer and a great performer. And that’s without taking into account that she is drop dead gorgeous. Her raunchy publicity pics translate into a surprisingly demure live show, and its only once someone gets a black sambucca or a Jaegermesiter down her throat that the beast emerges. But she has a powerful and diverse voice.

The girl has also learned to get around the limitations of being a piano based singer-songwriter by getting up and singing a few songs backed only by her guitarist, or he switches to keys. Talented lad that Thomas Selmer-Olsen!

The Tanz Café was fully booked and you could see that they were all there to see Louise. It was actually pretty quiet during her set, and Tans isn’t always. The crowd is the indefinable northern suburbs moneyed young set… who are they? And where do they go the rest of the time? I love that they go to see Louise, I wonder what CD’s they buy?

Craig Hines from Watershed stumbled in half way through her second set, and was riotously appreciative of the show, as was everyone else, myself included. Personally, I would like to get my hands on this girl, get her to really relax and let go and let her lose on some super powerful rock tracks.. think PJ Harvey blended with Kirsten Hirsch. Bu hey, you can’t have everything! What I did get though, was the promise of an interview for The Chiz for next week, so watch this space.

So, after that Friday night, I then headed slightly west to Back2Basix on Saturday night to catch The Hellphones and Japan and I. Well, you all know what I think of The Hellphones. I am their manager after all. But man, did they rock! And we also pulled a great crowd. Back2basix is small, but we still had to deny entry and run a queue for a while cos so many kids turned up. What a great night…

But the real gem was Japan and I. I booked them for4 this show because I saw them play with Fuzi last year some time. And I was not disappointed. Dressed u in matching little polka dot sun dresses, they rock like mother fuckers! Angela has got such a pair of lungs on her for such a little girl! My god! Deon Mass, the head judge of Afrikaans Idols and host of Saterdag Aand, was pogo-ing around the dance floor with the kids… this is a man I have never seen dance before!

The combination of the two bands made for a very special night, and the party would have gone on for bloody ages if Joburg power hadn’t switched off the lights at about 2am!

So a drive of 20kms reveals a great female, piano based singer songwriter, and a brilliant all girl ska punk band, as well as one of the best rock n roll bands in SA at the moment. This coming weekend I will be confined to central JHB, but on Friday night, it is HHP, Magesh and BLK JKS at The Bassline, Goldfish at the 88Lounge and The Cellar Door at Horror Café in Newtown… mmm, musical num nums!
