Goldfish have spent the last two years coming from nowhere to really shake some people's perceptions of SA music, live music and dance music.

As you will see from this intervierw, they are not comfortable with the Commercial House label, yet continue to grow in commercial success and appeal. They are technically very accomplished musicians, yet are there for he party and the good times, not only for the joy of complicated music!

They compleed this interview via email from their hotel room in Osaka... I really liked that idea a lot! I hope you enjoy reading the interview as much!

1) What was the genesis of the idea for Goldfish? How do two jazz hounds end up making commercial house music?
The desire to mix jazz with electronic music and do it all live! Commercial house music? Bob Sinclair is commercial house music buddy…not that Goldfish is underground or anything…

2) One of your strongest points as an outfit in my book is how well you guys do live. Do you consciously work on alive show or are you just plain enthusiastic?
Every time we perform live we are sharpening what we do and we have been playing a lot of shows this year to promote the CD. I think the enthusiasm comes from really loving what we do and feeding off the energy of the amazing crowds we have had the pleasure of performing to in 2006.

3) Technical abilities as instrumentalists aside, how physically coordinated do you have to be to do what you guys do live? Looks hectic to me. Are you two guys who can rub your tummy while patting your head and rotating your feet counterclockwise?
And whistle a tune while thinking about what/where/when we are going to do next! Its best not to think about it too much when you are trying to do a few things at the same time and just let the music take you otherwise the traffic jams start in your head and it all falls apart.

4) Because you basically do play commercial house, there is the temptation to write you guys off as a ‘colour by numbers’ kind of band seeking the mainstream. How musically dense is your work from a technical point of view?
Are their serious musical complexities behind what you do?
From a serious music point of view it’s not really complicated but there are intricacies which make it more complex than you would expect if you just scratch the surface. We aren’t trying to make our music commercial it’s just the way we like to make music that sometimes has a commercial appeal. We have always been big on having great vocal performances in our music as that’s what we enjoy and this has helped the music get onto radio but we didn’t put vocals on tunes to get onto radio! Stuff that. The chances are in SA that you won’t get on radio anyway even if you are commercial!

5) You’ve both been around the block for a few laps. Dave was in Dorp, you play together in Breakfast included, Dom does session work all over the palce. HOW exactly does this experience help you with Goldfish?
All our musical experiences have been like stepping stones to the next project and they have all influenced us in various ways both musically and otherwise.
I don’t think Goldfish would have existed if we didn’t go through all that other stuff before hand.

6) Watching your shows, I see remarkable thing happening whereby you are turning club music fans to the concept of live original music. And at the same time, you are still keeping the live music crowd happy. Did you anticipate this? Is it all part of a cunning plan?
This has been a remarkable side effect! With the culmination of it at Kirstenbosch in front of 6000 people aged 7 months to 70 years all stomping up and down shouting GOLDFISH GOLDFISH GOLDFISH….

7) You use various vocalists on your tracks, yet never perform live with a singer. Is there any temptation to get someone on board, or do you simply view vocals as another track in the mix?
We had Melanie Scholtz performing with us at Kirstenbosch she is the vocalist featured on the track Times may change you on Caught in the loop. Generally we just like to keep it simple and with all the touring it gets quite expensive to have more people flying around etc. But we will be doing some shows in the future with some more great guests.

8) As Goldfish now, you have played some nice international shows. What is the real, quantifiable difference about playing outside SA as compared to even your most successful shows here?
I think to answer this properly we really need to do more shows internationally as we haven’t really done enough to compare yet. We did our first show in Japan on Tuesday night and had a great response from them and some record labels where there so who knows!!
SA is up there for sure people

9) Are you two making a full time living from music, or are you closet Wimpy waiters? If yes, what else do you do aside from Goldfish in the music trade?
Would you like fries with this answer or just a Watershed gimpy burger?
No its music music music no time for anything else…

10) In two years you guys have grown immensely. Looking at it dispassionately, your next goal must be overseas. How do you hop to achieve that cross over and do you really want to end up out of SA for most of your year?
We are definitely going to be doing some overseas touring but we have no desire to move there as SA is our home and we love it. We are sitting in a little hotel room in Osaka Japan at the moment and its cold and grey and a great place to be answering a question about how much we love it in SA.
Unfortunately we do need to expand our horizon which means touring and hopefully releasing the album in more territories.

11) How many instruments do you guys play? And please can you explain your musical background and training.
Dave plays Saxophones, Flute, Clarinet and Guitar Dom plays Keyboards, Double bass and the fool.
We both did degrees in Jazz at UCT which is where we met up originally.
The rest is too long a story for this interview…

12) You are slowly but surely gathering a huge live following, and yet this doesn’t seem to be translating into much radio play. What’s your position on that?

The music industry in SA is quite frustrating to be honest between the radio stations blasting us with overseas content and the cd shops only interested in selling the overseas content that the radio stations are blasting, its rather like pulling barbed wire from somewhere but the interesting thing is that the more we talk to people overseas the more you start to realize that that’s pretty much what its like in most places. Music is a hard industry to be in and we are happy to make inroads where we can. Moaning about it isn’t going to change anything we need action from people to vote with their support for good SA music by buying it and going to shows and not listening to crap radio because there’s nothing else! The great thing is nowadays the internet has released a lot of us from the strangle-hold that mainstream media has had on everyone in the past and you have choices you just need to be more discerning.

13) Caught in the Loop” has been out for a while now… what plans for a new album sometime soon?
We are going to be concentrating on recording the new album during the first part of 2007 so we won’t be doing as many performances as we have been in 2006. We are looking forward to hitting the studio hard again after doing so much live stuff.

December is upon us - have mercy

Friday is the 1st of December, the 1st day of the last month of the year. For me, 2006 has been an epic year of mind-numbing proportions. I have learned more about business, my self and people in this year than I think I have learned in the three before that.

It has been a tough year, with some hard lessons. I believe I possibly wasn't listening in the past, so the hammer came out this year. That said, it has also been a magnificent year and I feel priveliged to be here, doing what I do.

Some of what has happened has been unneccesary in a way, some people just really didn't listen, and others were just bad choices. I made some big mistakes and also took some delightful wrong turns. But over all, I can honestly say that it has been a good year in its sum total.

So, to celebrate the bounty of another year alive and breathing, here is a selection of live music for you all to enjoy... this week even covering the Eastern Cape!

This is becoming my traditional exhortation, but let not repetition dull the edge of it in your brains:

Go out and see live music. This is your culture, embrace it, live it, make a difference in your world. Don't let the radio or TV or media rule your mind, find your own truth, be your own person!

So, since this week seems to have been about radio all week, thought I'd just carry omn twistingthe knife a bit withthat title. Silly I know, but hey, you know, gott amake myself feel better somehow.

Anyhoo, so this weekend dawns fresh and willing. Where will you go?

There are some nice events on, but if you want to really make a difference and put your money where your mouth is, please put you hands in your pockets, pack your passports and come through to Benoni on Saturday afternoon.

I am acting as MC for a great anti-rape gig organised by the Benoni City Times... details Below. Rape is the most digusting crime I can think of really, except maybe sex crimes involving children, and this is an opportunity to support an independent Rape Crisis centre that, without our help, may well end up closing as its government fundung just doesn't cover their costs.

So think seriously about this one, its one afternoon and you can still go jolling afterwards. Please support us as we try to raise some cash to make a difference to those trauatised by this terrible crime.

Yes indeed, Sunday is Guy Fawkes night... its funny how so many bands remembered the osbcure Euro centric event of Halloween (or is it becasue it has become such a toy of that cultural imperialist nation, the USA)

And yet, no-one really seems to have rememberd the date that the celebrated Anarchist Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the British Houses of parliament. In terms of the social revolution and the so-called punk ethic of so many of these bands.. I DO find that a tad surprising...
